Abella
Abella (also known as Abella in Salerno, Abella Castellomata) was a physician of the mid-twelfth century. Abella studied and instructor at Salerno Medical School. Salerno Medical Institute. 1. Abella is believed to have died sometime in 1380. However, the precise date her birth and death is not clear. Abella taught at Salerno's medical School, a school of standard medical practices and bile, health of women and the type of women. Abella was a specialist in the field of embryology, along with Rebecca de Guarna. 3 She wrote two works: De atrabile (On Black Bile) and De natura seminis humani (on the nature of the Seminal Fluid) which neither have survived to this day. The 19th century analysis of Salvatore de Renzi of the Salerno School of Medicine mentions Abella as one of four women, who along as Rebecca de Guarna and Mercuriade as well as Constance Calenda, were known as lecturers and practise medicine. Abella was one of four women that were considered as known as the Mulieres Salernitanae (or women from Salerno).
